Concise Explanation and Background for the Current Crisis in Iraq
Here's the situation:
Shiites are cut throats (literally) who call themselves Muslims but have tried to make other Muslims be like themselves in beliefs. Other Muslims dont want that. So Shiites have historically tortured and killed them.
When Saddam took power he aligned himself with Sunni who are dynamically opposed to Shiites and pretty much always have been in a civil war with them.
However Saddam is said to have had his own personal family way of dealing with dissidents and enemies that was on par with the worst of the Shiites.
We pretty much turned a blind eye to him until he started running garage sales on his oil upsetting the balance of power in our oil cartels as well as the Middle East one. Saddam was warned in no uncertain terms by his kin folk ruling in the region and by the Arabs this was not cool. He didn't listen but lowered oil prices again.
His days were numbered.
When we had 911 we went to take care of Saddam first. I will not speculate on that but let you draw your own conclusions.
So if Saddam was with the Sunni then we had to back the bad guys (like we did at first in WWI only that was because of JP Morgan and another story for another time) against the more sane and less cut throat Sunni.
Iraq has elections and of course there is discord due to the centuries long civil war. Finally they have a president/PM. In making negotiations for an end to our war there, the PM put restrictions on our military that we could not abide because he wanted all American troops out. Then he again allowed Shiites to suppress and kill Sunnis. But the Sunni who in living memory had had the upper hand, and were strong enough not to take this sh*t lying down, rose up in rebellion.
Iran who are Shiite said they will come help their brothers against the Sunni.
And we Americans are asked to come "help".
